A few weeks ago a friend of mine mentioned the organization, Everybody Wins, on facebook in regards to literacy in Atlanta. Now I do not have children yet but as long as I have lived here I've always heard how poorly the Atlantan children are with reading. Her plug on the program prompted me to get involved so I immediately surfed the net to find out more. I joined the non-profit organization as a reading mentor last week and today I met with my student, Stephanie, for our reading session. I actually looked forward to it all week ;0). Today while sitting on the colorful area rug, reading aloud and sounding enthusiastically out all of the words I felt sort of like a mother in a sense. I know when I do have a daughter or son of my own I will enjoy reading to them just as much. Stephanie told me that she placed my 'getting to know you' form on her bedroom wall with stickers. That really touched my heart because her big brown eyes just lit up with excitement. Thanks Dearroka for putting me on to Everybody Wins. I sure feel like a winner just in my second week ;0)
If you are in the Atlanta area and wish to give back please do join Everybody Wins, it is only 30 minutes of your time spent reading to a needy child on their lunch break. I guarantee you will feel just as rewarded as they do. You can find more information at www.everybodywins.org.
I hope you find it in your heart to give back in some way, shape or form. Volunteering is so rewarding!
