Shop your Shape

Today while discussing a not so flattering celebrity picture on Facebook, my workout buddy and Pretty Girl Rock founder, Dearroka, suggested a series on how to dress for your body type. So without further adu today's first series post will showcase the Pear shape.

We’ve all seen the “Dressing for your body type” articles telling us advices & tips on how to make our shapes look their best. While some of these articles are great, I feel as though most of them are geared towards the notion that ALL WOMEN WANT TO BE HIGH SCHOOL SKINNY and chile please, I sure don’t!

Now don’t get me wrong, some women do want to be as thin as they possibly can manage but others, like myself, don’t necessarily want to hide their curves they actually want to embrace and accentuate them. So if you are like me, this is the “Shop for your Shape” written with you in mind
According to the fashion gods there are four general body shapes:
1.    Pear, 2. Apple, 3. Hourglass and 4. Straight

Today’s series will talk about the Pear Shape. The pear shape is characterized by a slender neck, narrow shoulders, small bust, refined rib cage, shapely waist, generous lower hips, and full thighs. You've got a fabulous waistline that is feminine and shapely lower body!  A celebrity example of a pear shape is the beautiful Alicia Keys. Pictured below is Alicia in a form fitting grey knit dress that accentuates her curvaceous body and adds length to her frame. This is a great outfit for the ladies who want to embrace their womanly hips, thighs and bootay! Other famous pear shapes would be Shakira, Rhianna and Beyonce'. Pear shapes are awesome ladies, learn to love your body the way God made you. ♥

Contrarily if you do not wish to accentuate your lower pear shaped region here are some key things you should avoid when dressing your body type.

-       Tapered pants will slim your leg drawing more attention to your thighs and butt so try buying flowy pants like bootcuts as opposed to straight or skinny jeans.
-
If you do not want to accentuate your hips stay clear of pencil skirts  & tight dresses like the one worn above.

-       Garments with shoulder pads will help add balance to your hip shoulder ratio as well.

-       Avoid buying jackets that are cropped or hip length if you want to draw attention away from your hip region.

-       You can draw more attention to your top half by wearing a brighter or printed colors for your blouse and darker colors for your bottom.

-       If you want to draw more attention to your small or medium bustline buy v necks or cowl neck blouses.

-       Puffy sleeves or those trendy strong shoulder blazers will help balance out your upper half with your lower half. Just remember to buy one that hits below the hip level.

-       A line dresses or ones with an empire waistline look great on pear shapes for those that want to mask their hips. Choose a flowy fabric opposed to those with lots of lycra and spandex.

The next series post will focus on the Apple shape so stay tuned.
