Naturally Glowing Skin

The Spring is here and there is no better accessory than a glowing complexion. Before you run to your nearest pharmacy to get the latest skin brightening serum try a few DIY natural remedies at home. I recently learned some natural & effective ways to treat and fade hyperpigmentation. I also discovered through research on the Skin Deep database that some chemical ingredients in meds like 'hydroquinone' are toxic to the skin, although frequently prescribed by dermatologists. Today, hydroquinone has been banned in European Union, Canada, Japan and France. However, products containing hydroquinone are easily available online. The best and most effective way to clear up blemishes is the natural way. Luckily, nature provides a number of effective alternatives that will help protect the skin without the harmful effects of chemicals like hydroquinone.

Before we get into how to clear up blemishes here are a few facts on hyperpigmentation for your general knowledge:
Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that produces dark spots or patches on your skin. The spots are caused by excess melanin, the substance in your body that gives your skin its color.
Everyone should use sunscreen to protect against damaging ultraviolet radiation, but if you have hyperpigmentation, it is especially important. Even the lights in your office or sunlight coming through a car or building window can expose your skin to ultraviolet radiation.
Women are more likely than men to develop melasma. Hormones associated with pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy are generally the cause of melasma in women.

How to get Naturally Glowing Skin:
Lemon Juice (citric acid)
Lemon has brightening & exfoliating properties. Simply squeeze the lemon juice into a small container or directly on a soft cotton pad, rub the lemon juice with a hint of sugar granules on your skin to remove dead cells and lighten blemishes. Do no go out into the sunlight and always wear a sun protectant to avoid hyperpigmentation or sun burn.
This is a great method to exfoliate dead skin cells on rough areas like the knees & elbows while making them more even toned with your natural complexion.

Papaya soap contains an enzyme called "papain," also known as "papaya proteinaise", that breaks down certain proteins in the skin.  It dissolves the dead skin cells on the surface of your face, making it useful as an exfoliant that reveals your newer, healthier skin cells. Papain has also been used to remove the outer layer of skin from wounds and ulcers and, with regular use, papaya soap could fade the appearance of scars over time. By the same principle, it could also slightly lighten dark spots and freckles. It does not, however, contain any bleaching agents that would drastically lighten or whiten the skin. When concentrated, papain does appear to have some ability to give the skin a lighter appearance over time because of its exfoliating properties. With prolonged use, it could gradually fade dark spots and give skin a healthier glow.

Eat a well balanced diet and avoid heavy and oily foods, because these foods are thought by some to make skin appear dull and dark. Replace them with whole-grain cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean meats.
Be sure to use a top-quality sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 every time you leave the house. If you have a lot of sun exposure inside be sure to dab it on when indoors too. Sun exposure makes dark skin darker, not lighter.
Lastly remember to drink lots of water. Water helps to flush out toxins, nourishes and moisturizes our entire bodies and will help your skin look it's best.
