Which Way from Here?
I'm sure by now most of you have come across the term 'life coach' when it comes to navigating the waters of life. Coaching in the grand scheme of things is the practice of supporting an individual through the process of achieving a specific personal or professional result. Have you ever participated in a sport or organized activity in your youth? My sport was track and field and the coaches job was to train our bodies and motivate our minds to tackle the event we were entering. I believe that mentors or coaches are always needed throughout life and although you are perfectly capable of being your own life coach sometimes you may need a bit of encouragement along the way.
Most of us are life coaches to our family and friends and don't even realize it. Do you often get approached for advice from colleagues around a particular subject be it relationships, finance or motherhood? If you joyfully dish out your advice and encourage your 'clients' to be their best you my friend are a life coach. Life coaches can specialize in areas like relationships, careers or personal growth. They promise to motivate, offer support when clients need a boost in confidence and help them decide which direction to take.
"In a perfect world, everyone could figure this out for him or herself, but we live in such a complicated time that most of us need all the help we can get," says life coach Libby Gill.
Often, people need someone to help them take the dreams they have in their heads -- the visions of what they want to do next with their lives and do the work to make them a reality. If you are having an issue within your life and feeling stuck perhaps you should seek the counsel of a life coach.
Life coaching addresses the whole person, not just cardiovascular, strength or flexibility training. Life coaching digs under the surface of workout and nutrition plans to discover why a client is unhealthy, what behaviors led to the problem, what obstacles are in the way in daily life and how the client can make lasting behavior change. A life coach creates awareness by asking questions, backing a variety of strategies and options, and supporting action. With regard to the five stages of behavior change (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance), a life coach continues to support appropriate “action” while simultaneously building a strong foundation in “contemplation” and “preparation.”
"If you are frustrated with an aspect of your life, not sure how to stop making the same choices you keep making or just want to have more happiness, peace of mind and passion -- life coaching can do that for you," says Rhonda Britten, founder of the Fearless Living Institute.
